Advent Calendar :: December 21
Spring
Snowdrops are among the first heralds of spring. And as faithful as they are in their return each year, it is always such a pleasant surprise to see them once again when they put in their reappearance.
First there are tiny green shoots, and before long the first plump white heads appear. And then they begin blooming long before winter is over, when there is easily a chance of a late snowfall or two. That is, if there happens to be a real winter that year.
If the winter happens to be a mild one, then the first green shoots could easily appear soon after Christmas. Yet regardless of the weather, harsh or mild, they continue growing and blooming cheerfully without pause.
Spring is most certainly on its way.

Aren’t they just gorgeous? Along with crocuses. Or croci? 😀 The first time I got some was when I bought a house and was delighted they appeared in well, whatever month it was. I loved looking for their gorgeous white heads. I think I bought some after that but their first white blooming as such a surprise could never be surpassed.

i so enjoy snowdrops as well. that must have been such a thrill when you saw them that first time! we never had any in the garden when i was growing up, and i always enjoyed seeing them in others’ or in parks. they grow here now, though, and i so enjoy watching for them. i looked for them the other day, but so far there is no sign of them. some years they really do put in a very early appearance.
how about one crocus and another and another, and many more of them 😀
in any case, i agree – snowdrops & the other ones you mentioned are such smile-bringers :).
