Launch of the Leaves

These trees growing just outside the front door appear to have become resigned to the fact that they are targets for my camera. For years they have captured my attention and when I got a digital camera a number of years ago, they were patient from the get-go, posing politely from season to season, year after year. And speaking of seasons, the change from one to the next has usually been gradual.

However one day last November, a sudden and incredible windstorm put an end to autumn in less than half an hour. My camera happened to be handy, and it captured the launch of the leaves into the air. It was wild and wonderful, with some intermittent moments of sunshine, and the leaves were leaping and dancing joyfully in the air, in the freedom of the moment like children bounding out of school after the bell has gone to end the day.

Another glimpse of this incredibly wild windstorm which also had its sunny moments, was captured shortly before #3 above, and was posted a number of weeks ago. If you missed that one or would like to see it again, just click on the thumbnail below. A link there will return you here if you like.

Blog Note
Q :: Were there really that many leaves flying in the air, and were there that many leaves on the ground, or have those been photo-shopped?
A :: There were really that many leaves. It was quite a launch!

  3. Great shots and telling, Kris. Especially: the leaves were leaping and dancing joyfully in the air, in the freedom of the moment like children bounding out of school after the bell has gone to end the day.

  7. First let me say that I just love what you do with the blog colors and the photo’s…are all the backgrounds available in the one theme you use? I like your interpretation of the challenge and the story you share. The tree in my photo which was taken in mid-Sept last year(much earlier than an autumn day) lost all its leaves when the remant of the hurricane came through the weekend before. Actually every tree in the park was bare. http://wp.me/p1PaX2-4N

    • hi diggingher – thanks much for your kind words! the backgrounds are an automatic default – and the highlight feature of the duotone theme. it selects one and sometimes two of the colours in the photo image. many of my images have warm colours, so alot of my posts get a brown background. however spring and summer flowers are sometimes quite brilliant.

the story behind your tree is sad, but it is a poignant image. really enjoyed that one.
      thanks for stopping by!

Here’s a few lines I wrote around 4 yrs ago, it seemed to completely mesh with your story, hope you don’t mind my sharing it here:

    THE LIFE OF LEAVES

    Spring green
    Leaves grow
    On branches unseen
    Quivering breeze
    Spiraling low
    From verdant trees

    Autumnal leaves
    Drift to the ground
    Mission complete
    Heaped in mounds
    Earth does greet
    Separated children found

it happened so quickly, i was happy to capture a few moments of still shots – although even those do not look all that still 🙂
