sisters

Lots of stories, lots of adventures
lots of laughter together
decades of memories
There is something quite wonderful
about two sisters who are friends.

Blog Notes from November 25, 2011

Q :: Who are these two women?
A :: That’s my mom (on the right) with one of her sisters. Both of them exemplify to me the fine art of sisterhood including its all its wonders, joy, and the fun of it. Stories abound of them always having been close since their childhood and even their earliest working years. They are still close, although not necessarily in proximity, because my parents emigrated from Germany more than fifty years ago. However whenever my mom visited Germany, or my aunt visited Canada, it was like picking up where they had left off last.

Q :: How old are they?
A :: Both are past hiding their age, as they recognize that not only every year, but every new day is a gift. My aunt is 87 and my mom’s 86th birthday is just around the corner. While this was captured a few years ago during one of my aunt’s visits to Canada, both of them still look pretty much the same.

Q :: Any additional thoughts?
A :: Lots more could be said. They are both fiercely competitive at card and board games. They both are excellent cooks and bakers – they trained together. And for the record, Tante Ulla is one of my favourite aunts. To know her is to love her, as my family and friends who have met her will attest. Neither of them have plans to fly anymore, however they both still enjoy each other’s company over the phone on a regular basis.

Q :: Why was this image selected for Family for the photo challenge for November 25, 2011?
A :: It was a tough decision. There were at least nine other contenders altogether, and before I digress too far digging up more of them, here they are in no particular order:

  18. I like this picture very much. I have brothers; no sisters. Their faces make me ache for that kind of sisterhood. Thank you for sharing.

    • i always thought it would be wonderful to have a sister, too.
if it is any consolation, they also had their share of squabbles as kids, too.
      especially over board games.
and the funny thing is that even nowadays my aunt always refers to my mom as her little sister – because she was always the shortest one growing up, and younger – even though both are well into their 80’s 🙂

    • thanks. it is one of my favourites of them.
it must be wonderful to have sisters that one can miss.
not that the missing is so wonderful, but having those that one misses speaks a great tribute to what a great relationship between sisters there can be.

  21. I love reading the “about” part of your mom and her sister. This is what a loving and supportive family is all about. I would to grow old one day and have the same glow and happiness like them when I’m around my siblings. There are an inspiration to me. Stay blessed and best wishes to you and your family. Thank you.

  23. I think it’s a brilliant pic too, a great choice for any photo-challenge. Well-deserved pingbacks too 🙂

Only child here so about the only thing I can relate to is the cooking/baking – and being competitive at cards and board games.

i can’t really relate to having a sister either, although it appears to be a wonderful thing. and the cooking/baking somehow passed me by. but competition at cards and board games, that is most definitely me, too 😀
